As an artist and poet, I’m interested in those threshold spaces where language gives way to images – and texture and color might take over. My work is influenced by years of study in fiber art, cross cultural symbols and ritual, and the codes and music I find everywhere present, most often in the natural environment.
In these paintings I use a lot of primary color and deliberate whimsy and childlike flourishes. The works are most often on wood, which gives me more freedom to create layers of paint, marks, texture – a metaphor perhaps for the ways we uncover meaning in ourselves, and the ways music and poetry give shape to our lives.
